Retrospective 2024

How to Start – this was the guiding theme of the Weltformat Graphic Design Festival 2024, where we explored a question that concerns every designer at some point: How do you even begin? It quickly became clear: there is no single beginning.

For many young visitors still in training or just starting their careers, the focus was on how to launch into the world of graphic design. What can we learn from established studios – and which steps helped them transition into independence?

Others were more interested in the creative process itself: How do you start a new project? How do you overcome the blank page, find that initial spark, and get things moving?

This year’s festival offered space for both perspectives – and showed that starting is not a single moment, but a process that we all shape in our own way. Through conversations with international guests, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and many informal exchanges, we celebrated the magic of beginning – along with all the questions, doubts, and ideas that come with it.

Exhibitions

With the exhibitions 100 Best Posters and The Most Beautiful Books from All Around the World, we once again offered an inspiring look at current trends in graphic design. These were joined this year by a beautifully staged showcase of Fantoche Festival posters at the Kunsthalle and – for the first time – our own postage stamp exhibition in the Heiliggeist Chapel.

Opening Day

The opening day began in the morning with guided introductions to the exhibitions at the Heiliggeist Chapel, the Kornschütte, and the Kunsthalle Luzern. In the afternoon, the symposium at the Moderne followed with two insightful panel discussions addressing current topics and challenges in graphic design. The ceremonial presentation of the Newcomer Award marked the start of the evening program, which continued with a communal festival dinner. The day concluded on a high note with the Opening Party, where visitors, friends, and design enthusiasts came together to celebrate.

Workshops

Workshop Sunday at the Viscosistadt offered a diverse program for designers of all experience levels. A particular highlight was the “Work Like” workshops, which provided deep insights into the working processes of renowned studios. One such session was hosted by Studio Dumbar/DEPT®, led by Jasper Scholma and Elvin van Dalen, where participants explored the connection between sound and motion and integrated audio into their own motion design projects. Alongside the “Work Like” sessions, other workshops introduced new techniques and approaches in graphic design. A shared lunch created the perfect setting for networking and exchange among participants.
